TRAVERSE CITY - A local businesswoman will be featured on one of cable television's most popular home craft shows.

Rose Scharmen, president of Cloth Envelope Company Inc. near Traverse City, is among the guests next week on the Carol Duvall Show on the Home and Garden Television cable network. The episode airs Tuesday at 9 a.m., and HGTV airs locally on cable channel 54.

Scharmen will do a craft demonstration on making a homemade cloth envelope. The small business she runs with three partners in Mayfield Township mass produces the unique envelopes, which have a growing niche in the stationery market.

"We think we're the only company in the world that can manufacture them," Scharmen said. "This particular product, women go nuts over it."

Her effort to appear on the show began more than a year ago, when she met with another area resident who had appeared as a guest. She tracked down Duvall's home address and sent her a letter - in a cloth envelope - and soon received an e-mail from the host.

It led to an appearance deal and Scharmen went to California in September to tape the show, which is among HGTV's most-popular daytime programs.

"My mother is probably Carol Duvall's biggest fan," said Scharmen, whose mother accompanied her to the show and got to meet the popular host. "Carol is such a wonderful lady. She's incredibly sweet."

Scharmen also is showing off her company's unique product this weekend at the 58th annual National Stationery Show in New York City, which draws suppliers from throughout the world.
